For my personal project Johnny Softspot, I created a complex rig off my character. I will go into some details and findings.

Envelope Deformers

One of the most important things I learned with rigs is envelope deformers. They allow the user to manipulate pieces of a character. Gives a lot more variety when animating. The entire model has some form of envelope deformer.

Hands/Mouths

I have been working on this personal project with my colleague Jack Moroney.

He is not too knowledgeable on the rigging  construction process but was still able to contribute to the rig.

I sent him a copy of this rig and he created a number of mouth / hand shapes.

Patches/Masks

With the patches I have set up, I am able to move the masks that hide certain elements such as the line art of the arms/hand joints.

This character's design was made with rigging in mind. I made a patch that would hide the top and bottom half of the body together for more animating options.

Costumes/Angles

A great addition were the costumes. There will be more made later when necessary but for the current short the character is only in costumes at a 3/4 angle.

The bag alt is counted as a costume as it is easier to import the model with the bag into the appropriate scenes.

I got the other angles by manipulating the features using the envelope deformers and keys.

Z Depth

To compensate for the character's limbs, patches were used so I had the ability to alter the z depth.

With the limbs split up into two parts I am able to alter the z depth of one of the joined parts without effecting the other.
