Star Butterfly Rig
For my next rigged project, I wanted to work using a preexisting character. I decided to make one of Star from "Star vs. the Forces of Evil". I based it off one of the official model sheets and learned a lot of new techniques while keeping the design on model. I will go into some details and findings.

Split Groups
To connect elements together i used split groups. It contains the overlay, line , colour and an underlay layer and uses a cutter node as the auto patch.

The method I used previously was unreliable as it would leave gaps and mess up the line art of both objects when intersecting.

With split groups it ensures the lines and colour of the two objects merge with one another efficiently.
Sync Layers
I used sync layers for the shoes to help them easily flip to the opposite side.

Moving one drawing substitution (The Shoe) effects the other drawing substitutions (horn and eye design) as they are synced.
For the purpose of this rig i used the same technique for the mouth shapes.
However this presents problems as adjusting the peg of one substitution will effected the others in the sync layer. So for mouths it's better to just set them up using only pegs.
Side Mouth
To get this effect I separated the inside of the mouth from the mouth itself. I made the inside its own object.

I masked the inside mouth to the colour art of the head. I then plugged the colour art of the original mouth into the head
Hair Design
Because Star is designed with her eyes clipping through her hair I made sure to keep that detail in the rig.

It wasn't too hard as it was simply just masking the colour of the eyeballs into the hair colour. To make this most effective I split the front of her hair into 3 shapes. The eyeball colour since masked into the hair strands will disappear upon contact.
Master Controllers
Added 3 master control sliders for the head torso and legs. I made each slider match colours with the corresponding part.

Separated them into a comp just for master controllers to avoid confusion.

Can mix and match poses using the sliders making animation easier for the animator.
